New enriched rearing method developed at the station
To make the normal rearing tank and practices more closely resemble the natural environment of juvenile Atlantic salmon and brown trout we added shelters into the tank and more variation to the water environment. There were unexpected changes in water level, current speed and direction. We used normal feeders and pellets for the fish in enriched tanks but the changes in water distributed them unexpectedly. This has e.g. prompted the fish in the enriched tanks to forage on natural prey.
